Chanute Airforce Base and Illini Inn and Suites
Chanute Air Force Base, located in Champaign County, Illinois, near Rantoul, was a significant U.S. Air Force technical training facility from its establishment in 1917 until its closure in 1993. Named after aviation pioneer Octave Chanute, the base played a pivotal role in training airmen, especially during World War I and World War II.

Visiting Officers Quarters
In the photo of Chanute Airforce Base the red circle is where Illini Inn and Suites currently resides in respects to Chanute Airforce Base.
As war efforts began to grow, the need to house visiting officers would drastically increase to inspection the base or were required to train new recruits for expansion that happened during 1938. Chanute Air Force base would see an even greater influx of recruits, personnel and construction after the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941.
Chanute Air force base would grow in size and capacity because the United States began training international ally troops for the war efforts happening across the globe. This demand in needing to bring officers from other divisions to train technicians, pilots and personnel would eventually lead to the creation of the visiting officers quarters (current day Illini Inn and Suites), which is highlighted in red in the photo.

World War I: Established on May 21, 1917, Chanute Field was among 32 Air Service training camps initiated after the U.S. entered the war.

World War II: The base experienced a surge in recruits post-Pearl Harbor, leading to housing shortages. Notably, in March 1941, the 99th Pursuit Squadron, the first all-Black fighter squadron known as the Tuskegee Airmen, was activated at Chanute.

Post-War Period: After World War II, Chanute continued as a primary technical training center. However, in December 1988, the Department of Defense recommended its closure, which was finalized on September 30, 1993.
